Opening Day for Trails 2016 – 10am, Saturday April 16

On Saturday, April 16, Bike Concord with our partners Monument Impact and Bike East Bay will host a group ride in celebration of the Rails to Trails Conservancy‘s annual Opening Day for Trails. It’s a day to appreciate and enjoy the great trail facilities that the hard work and vision of advocates have created for us.

Families with kids are welcome on this ride. We’ll be keeping a very slow pace, and will be careful to observe trail etiquette such as staying to the right to leave room for oncoming traffic.

As the name of the Rails to Trails Conservancy suggests, many successful trail projects are the result of a former railroad right-of-way. We have a great example right here in Central Contra Costa: the Iron Horse Trail. We will take the route now familiar to many of you, riding down the IHT from Concord all the way to Danville for a final stop at the former rail depot which now houses the Museum of the San Ramon Valley. Not far from there is a Peet’s Coffee which is hugely popular with cyclists. If we make good time, the Danville Farmers’ Market will still be open for a little while after we arrive.

The ride will assemble at 10am at Keller House, where our friends at Monument Impact are based. Keller House is a couple of blocks from Concord BART, in case you are arriving from out of town.  Thanks to generous funding from REI, we will have some snacks and other goodies for you, while supplies last.

From Keller House we will head west through residential streets to join the Monument Corridor Trail, which merges into the Iron Horse Trail at Monument Blvd.

At about the 6.2 mile mark, we’ll make a rest stop at Whole Foods in Walnut Creek. If this is as far as you want to go, it will be a convenient place to turn back.

Then we’ll get back on the trail and continue all the way to Danville, for a total distance of 12.5 miles. Here’s the ride route: https://goo.gl/maps/BeNQKn291Ju

If you can, please RSVP at the Facebook event.

See you there!
